How to use the Directory?

The added value of this Directory is its search functionality. By entering the appropriate fields in the dropdown boxes, the user will be able to narrow down his/her search and obtain rather precise results. The results can be sorted alphabetically by clicking in the fields. The Directory has been designed according to UNDP’s mandate and policies and it is essential to have an understanding of these to get optimum use from the database.

The Directory is not an exhaustive listing of organizations and institutions working in the field of democratic governance. Undoubtedly there are more organizations working in the field of democratic governance than the ones included. Comments and suggestions for improving the contents of the database are welcome. Please write to oslogovcentre@undp.org and include in the subject field the words: Governance Organizations Directory. The inclusion of an organization in this Directory does not imply an endorsement by UNDP of its work or working approaches.

1) The Directory is categorized according to UNDP’s areas of engagement or Service Lines (SL) in democratic governance:

  1. SL 2.1 Policy Support for Democratic Governance
  2. SL 2.2 Parliamentary Development
  3. SL 2.3 Electoral Systems and Processes
  4. SL 2.4 Justice and Human Rights
  5. SL 2.5 E-governance and Access to Information
  6. SL 2.6 Decentralization, Local Governance and Urban/Rural Development
  7. SL 2.7 Public Administration Reform and Anti-corruption

2) The Directory categorizes the activities of the organizations according to the following definitions.

  1. Research: providing broad-based investigations or in-depth analysis of issues.
  2. Evaluation: providing independent assessments of initiatives.
  3. Information access and brokering: developing and providing access to directories, information databases, libraries, and other informational products. Brokering knowledge to provide responses to client queries.
  4. Advocacy: actively promoting a particular policy or viewpoint for attaining its wider understanding and acceptance
  5. Policy: providing policy advice and solutions delivered through reports or recognized authorities in the field.
  6. Funding: contributing financial resources to programmes, projects and other initiatives
  7. Implementation: having responsibility for the achievement of a programme or project’s goals and objectives..
  8. Standard setting and regulation: establishing and monitoring compliance with the norms and standards needed to effectively operate in a particular field.
  9. Training and professional development: providing advice, expertise and educational opportunities to build people’s skills and competencies.
  10. Facilitation and mediation: providing specialist support to help ensure successful outcomes of events or negotiations.
  11. Networking: providing necessary interconnections between organizations.
  12. Consulting: providing knowledge services through experts available for short term assignments.
  13. Technical assistance: providing assistance to implement projects or activities, through the provision of specific expertise.
  14. Legal assistance : includes direct legal assistance to individuals and organizations

An organization may carry out one or more activities of those listed, or other activities not listed here.

3) The Directory includes only organizations implementing activities at global or regional level. Organizations implementing activities affecting two or more regions are classified as global, as are those whose area of work is global in nature. The regional divisions used correspond to the geographic classification of UNDP’s regional bureaus:

  1. Africa
  2. Arab States
  3. Asia & the Pacific
  4. Europe & the CIS
  5. Latin America & the Caribbean
